Colon cancer surgery

Colon cancer surgery often is a first step in treating colon cancer.  In fact, colon cancer surgery is a fairly normal occurrence at most hospitals.  Colon cancer surgery may be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments, such as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. The goal of colon cancer surgery is to cure the cancer.

Surgery is the most common treatment for all stages of cancer of the colon.  Surgery is always a permanent decision, therefore it is important to fully understand your options and the risks and benefits associated with each choice.  Surgery remains the primary treatment of colon cancer while chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy may be recommended depending on the individual patient’s staging and other medical factors.  Surgery and related treatment also focus on the patient’s overall

health and well-being, including life-style changes, prevention, nutrition, spiritual issues, etc.  The body adapts amazingly well to this surgery and you should be able to follow a normal diet again within a few weeks to months, once you recover.  Although mostly applied to patients with benign disease, minimally invasive surgery is now being used in patients with malignant disease as well.

Surgery  for cancer of the colon depends on the stage of your disease, your age, and your general health and is most effective for people with localized colorectal cancer.  In patients who are poor surgical risks, but who have large tumors which are causing obstruction or bleeding, laser treatment can be used to destroy cancerous tissue and relieve associated symptoms.

Colon Cancer Surgery And Treatments

Treatment of stage 0 (carcinoma in situ) may include the following types of surgery: Local excision or simple polypectomy.

Treatment of stage I colon cancer is usually resection/anastomosis.

Treatment of stage II colon cancer may include the following: Resection/anastomosis.

Treatment of stage III colon cancer may include the following: Resection/anastomosis with chemotherapy.

Treatment of stage IV and recurrent colon cancer may include the following: Resection/anastomosis (surgery to remove the
cancer or bypass the tumor and join the cut ends of the colon).

During your operation, your surgeon will check to see if your cancer has spread to any other organs, which will help determine the rest of your treatment.  Being told you have cancer of the colon is a frightening experience, especially if you are unaware of the many recent improvements that have been made in cancer treatment.  By understanding the illness and your treatment plan, you can start feeling in control of your life.

By taking preventative measures after your colon cancer surgery has taken place you will help to ensure that you do not have a recurrence.  There are several different types of colon cancer surgery that can be done and your doctor will certainly discuss these with you in advance.  Many people have been able to overcome their cancer and go on to lead normal lives after their colon cancer surgery has taken place.
